FAD fishing has come to play a major role in tuna purse seining, though it is clear that its bycatch issues cannot be ignored. In order for FADs to continue to be a viable tool—given the ecological and political considerations—adaptations must be made. Incorporating the guidelines on FAD construction provided in this chapter is a necessary first step in this process.
