Scientific Sampling and Data Collection

The primary scientific occupation of an observer at sea is to gather data on discards: tuna discards and the catch and discards of sharks, billfish, and other species. Other duties include collecting fish measurement data, collecting biological samples, and carrying out other research-related activities. Without these data, scientists would be unable to accurately monitor the health of the tuna stocks and other species encountered during fishing.
